A Winding Path

Alec and Eona Bell

This ninth-century hymn, attributed to St Ambrose, reminds us that in Advent we wait for the fulfilment of what God promised from the very beginning.  The music at the end of each verse feels unsettled, unresolved. The plainsong is like a journey along a winding path to a destination which is just out of sight, although we know by faith that it is there, and that it is the everlasting God.
